Ghana cannot afford to have former President John Dramani Mahama as its leader once more, according to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
As a result, he has urged Ghanaians to vote in the 2024 general elections to keep the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) in power.
According to him, the NPP is still the greatest option for Ghanaians, and everyone especially party members needs to put in a lot of effort to make sure the party wins in 2024.
Speaking on Saturday night at a ceremony held on the forecourt of the Accra Sports Stadium to present Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the NPP’s flagbearer for the 2024 election, following his victory in the party’s presidential primary, President Akufo-Addo remarked, “We cannot afford the return of the NDC in 2024.”
He said the NPP will win the 2024 presidential election provided its members remain united, despite the fact that the election will be challenging.
He believes that the party can defeat the NDC for a third time in a row if it remains united and determined.
As a result, President Akufo-Addo has tasked every party member with vigorously advocating for the party’s win.
In addition, he promised to honor the party by supporting its victory in the general elections in 2024.
Speaking at the same ceremony, the party’s general secretary, Justin Frimpong Kodua, stated that the opposition NDC now views the party as “no longer an Akan party” due to the victory of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, a northerner.
“Not long ago in this party, someone made a statement that when it comes to NPP, there’s no way a person from the north can be elected as the flagbearer for the party,” Justin Kodua said.
“Today, what has happened is history. The NPP is no more and can never be tagged as an Akan party because today we have a flag bearer who comes from the northern part of the country that shows the natural character of the NPP,” he added.
The NPP General Secretary emphasized, “We are also waiting to see the day that “Yaanom” (NDC) would also elect an Akan as a presidential candidate.”
Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia will face former President John Dramani Mahama after his election. Mahama received the support of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) earlier this year.
The party wants to break the record that no political party in Ghana has won more than two terms in a row under the Fourth Republic, which began in 1992 and continues to this day.
The major opposition party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), and the ruling New Patriotic Party are expected to engage in fierce competition in the 2024 election.
