Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, also known as “Wontumi,” is the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). He has denied claims made by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) that Brig. General Michael Opoku, the General Officer Commanding Central Command of the Ghana Armed Forces, has been assigned to rig the 2024 elections to benefit the ruling party.
The opposition party demanded at a press conference on Tuesday, November 19, that the army chief be removed immediately and that he not be included in the security plan for the general elections in 2024.
“A person like him has no place in the current environment where Ghanaians are calling for violence-free elections. Given his history, we call for his immediate removal from his position as GOC of the Central Command,” said Sammy Gyamfi, the Communications Officer of the NDC.
“The NDC wishes to serve notice to Brigadier-General Michael Opoku and his collaborators in the New Patriotic Party that we have them under our radar and will continue to monitor them with eagle eyes. This time around, he and his ilk shall not succeed. Violence cannot and will not win the NPP this year’s election,” Mr Gyamfi warned.
Mr. Antwi-Boasiako called the accusations “infantile” and said they are a last-ditch effort to justify a predicted electoral loss.
“The NDC is not campaigning vigorously in the Ashanti Region,” he said. “Instead, they are sitting in the comfort of their homes and offices, devising strategies to blame the NPP for election rigging. Meanwhile, the NPP is working tirelessly as though we are in opposition”, Wontumi said in a press statement copied to Ghanatodayonline.com
He noted that the NPP’s flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, had almost finished touring all 276 of Ghana’s constituencies, with just two more to go. In contrast, with barely eighteen days left until the general elections, NDC flagbearer former President John Mahama has only visited 65 constituencies.
“The accusations made by the NDC are a preemptive justification for their imminent defeat. He said that the army and police are simply required to keep the peace and deal with any potential violence from NDC members who are supposedly receiving training from retired Commissioner of Police Kofi Boakye. “We don’t need any army officer to rig the election in our favor,” he stated.
Wontumi reaffirmed his belief in the NPP’s prospects, citing the party’s diligent efforts and significant policies as the reason.
