John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress, has said that Speaker Alban Bagbin’s recent expulsion of four members of Parliament is indicative of a growing political crisis in Ghana.
Mahama voiced his worries about the condition of democracy in Ghana, pointing out that Speaker Bagbin’s decision was just overturned by the Supreme Court, causing Parliament to postpone indefinitely on Tuesday, October 22.
On Sunday, October 27, Mahama spoke at the St. Joseph the Worker Anglican Church’s 80th anniversary celebration in Accra and commended Bagbin for managing the stressful situation in Parliament.
In order to avoid such disputes in the future, he underlined how urgent it is to review Ghana’s constitution and pushed for a stronger system of government that can handle the nation’s changing needs.
“Recently, you saw what happened in parliament. We almost had a constitutional crisis. But for the mature handling of the Speaker in suspending the House, there could have been a clash between the judiciary and our Parliament. And so our government is in crisis.
“We need to reset, we need to restart, we need to look at our constitution again, we need to revise it and plug the loopholes and make it clearer so that in future we don’t have the kinds of issues that we have. Our attitudes are in crisis.”
