The NDC was criticized by the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) for not consulting the organization prior to releasing its Youth Manifesto.
On Tuesday, August 13, 2024, Daniel Oppong Kyeremeh, the president of NUGS, stated to asaaseradio.com that the student union was not consulted by the NDC while creating the policy.
“One of the worrying things affecting us is that these things being talked of, especially when it comes to the subsidy on our university fees, and all that, were done in isolation of the student union.
“We were not consulted, especially on this particular one that has to do with the university,” he noted.
He said that if discussions had taken place, NUGS would have liked to raise their many concerns regarding the viability and execution of the planned tuition waiver.
“We have a lot of questions we would’ve wanted to genuinely ask if the necessary consultations were done on this particular policy, its feasibility, and the implementation mechanism that, at some point, would be used in making sure this happens,” he added.
According to the president of NUGS, the NDC’s choice to bar the union from talks indicates a lack of consideration for the union’s possible contributions.
“You want to tell us we have nothing good to offer and something that is going to be implemented or it’s going to have an effect on we the students? How or what’s the big deal? I mean, bringing the student on board to also tender in their questions [and] tender in their recommendations,” he said.
In its 2024 Youth Manifesto, the NDC promised to remove first-year tertiary students’ academic expenses if elected, as stated by Flagbearer John Dramani Mahama on Monday, August 12, 2024.
