Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has stated that Ghana must not back down from its opposition to LGBTQ+ activities, even if doing so might have negative economic effects.
During his campaign visit in the Eastern Region, Dr. Bawumia addressed chiefs, religious leaders, and important stakeholders in Abuakwa North. He emphasized the significance of maintaining the nation’s cultural, family, and religious values.
“Under a Bawumia government, it will never happen. We will not accept it, no matter the cost. We have to stand firm on this issue. We will preserve our culture, our marriage, and our religion,” Dr. Bawumia asserted.
The Vice President’s comments are in stark contrast to a warning issued by the Finance Ministry on March 4, 2024, warning the government not to sign the “Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill,” which was approved by Parliament, because of possible economic consequences.
Ghana may lose over US$3.8 billion in World Bank funding over the course of the next five to six years, according to the Finance Ministry. This amount includes US$250 million for the Financial Stability Fund in 2024 alone as well as US$600 million in budget support.
The detrimental consequences that this may have on Ghana’s foreign exchange reserves and exchange rate stability were also emphasized by the ministry.
Parliament enacted the contentious bill, which outlaws LGBTQ+ activities and their promotion, by a unanimous vote on February 28, 2024.
If the President signs it into law, those who engage in same-sex activities would face sentences of six months to three years in jail.
There are now two cases challenging the legality of the measure before the Supreme Court, adding to its legal challenges.
