The main opposition party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has said that it will oppose any attempts by the majority in parliament to pass laws safeguarding President Nana Akufo-Addo’s legacy.

NDC General Secretary Fifi Kwetey described the suggested legislation to support free Senior High Schools (SHS) as a way to uphold the president’s legacy rather than correcting the shortcomings of the current policy.

Fifi Kwetey declared that the NDC would only support legislation aimed at improving the Free SHS scheme for the benefit of Ghanaians.

He criticized the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for putting up more effort to preserve the president’s legacy than to address the issues with the current course of action.

Mr. Kwetey emphasized that the Minority in Parliament will oppose any such political ploys.

“The law is all about politics and not for the good of the policy but for the whims of Nana Addo,” Kwetey pointed out, contending that rather than the policy’s efficacy, the Majority’s push for passage was motivated by the president’s convenience.

On Friday, June 14, 2024, Kwetey made these remarks during an interview for Joy FM’s 6:00 am news.

The administration is getting ready to introduce the Free SHS Bill to Parliament in the interim.

In light of the difficulties the program is currently facing and growing concerns about its cancelation by future administrations, the bill seeks to regulate and guarantee the sustainability of the Free SHS policy.
