Haruna Iddrisu, the minister of education, revealed that the public universities that underwent name changes under the Akufo-Addo administration will revert to their original names.
Speaking at the inaugural meeting of the CK Tedam University of Technology and Applied Sciences (CKT-UTAS) governing council, Mr. Iddrisu stated that his office is now consulting with important stakeholders.
He stated that the goal was to consider the universities’ credibility rather than to take away from the accomplishments of the individuals President Akufo-Addo named the institutions after.
“The Government has taken a decision to review the names of some of the universities and therefore, I will be presenting a bill to Parliament after a committee that I will be putting in place reviews it.”
“It is not to diminish the contribution of any individual, particularly names that were conferred on those institutions, but to reaffirm the foundational ethos and historical identities of our tertiary institutions. The decision is not taken lightly. We’ve had extensive consultations with the academic community and stakeholders, traditional leaders, alumni associations, students, and civil society” Mr Iddrisu added.
Prior to its 2019 rebranding and elevation to university status, the institution was known as the University of Development Studies’ Navrongo campus.
Ghanaian politician Clement Kubindiwor (CK) Tedam was a founding member of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP). He was a member of the Kufuor administration’s Council of State.
