The National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, has reaffirmed his pledge to increase the number of women in leadership positions in important sectors, district assemblies, and Parliament if elected in December’s general elections.

Speaking during the unveiling of the NDC Women’s Manifesto on Monday, September 30, 2024, Mr. Mahama emphasized that having gender parity in leadership positions is not just a moral obligation but also essential to Ghana’s development.

“We will increase women’s representation in Parliament, district assemblies, and leadership roles across all sectors. We will do this not only because it is the right thing to do, but also because Ghana needs the best of its human resources,” Mahama stated.

Mr. Mahama pledged to fully execute the Affirmative Action Act of 2024, a historic piece of law intended to increase the involvement of women in politics and government, as part of his larger gender agenda.

Mr. Mahama emphasized the need of institutionalizing women’s empowerment by saying, “The Affirmative Action Act of 2024 will ensure that women hold at least 30 per cent of political appointments.”

To protect women’s rights even further, the previous president promised to pass the Property Rights of Spouses Bill. He said that this law will guarantee equality in wealth distribution by safeguarding women’s property rights in marriage.

“Marriage unites spouses, and in the event of any unfortunate circumstances, properties such as buildings and farmland should be shared equally. No man should have the authority to evict a woman without her receiving her rightful share,” he added.

Furthermore, Mr. Mahama declared his intention to introduce a Domestic Workers Bill, which would shield women and other vulnerable domestic workers from abuse and exploitation.
