Road tolls will be reintroduced in a new, technical form, removing the physical barriers on the highways, according to Mr. Governs Kwame Agbodza, the Minister-designate for highways and Highways.
During his Appointments Committee vetting on Monday, January 20, he disclosed this information.
Compared to the former toll collection system, which entailed roadblocks and manual payment collection by toll workers, Mr. Agbodza’s declaration represents a substantial change.
In his remarks, Agbodza voiced his disapproval of the government’s earlier decision to abolish road tolls, emphasizing the possible revenue loss and the detrimental effect on the advancement of road infrastructure.
“We decided to caution the government not to cancel road tolls but to find a way to improve the system,” He clarified. Agbodza asserts that rather than being disassembled, the prior system could have been improved because it had shortcomings, especially in terms of stopping leakage.
Agbodza blasted the way the toll system was discontinued, calling it an act of “illegality,” pointing out that the decision was taken without adequate deliberation or consultation.
He brought up the previous government’s assertion that tolls were only earning ¢80 million, which he claimed was false given that road contractors nationwide are still due substantial sums.
Road contractors are currently due up to GH¢5,000, he noted, a substantial amount that illustrates the financial mismanagement and disregard associated with the old toll collection system.
According to Agbodza, the new system would be centered on using technology to increase the effectiveness of toll collection and do away with the necessity of physical obstacles that impede traffic.
Road toll collection will be made simpler with the use of contemporary techniques and technology advancements, which will also probably enhance the process of road development and maintenance in general.
In order to satisfy the concerns of both contractors and road users and guarantee that road infrastructure projects receive the required funds, Mr. Agbodza promised that the new approach will be equitable and effective.
