The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) will vehemently oppose any kind of government persecution of its members, according to notice given by Henry Nana Boakye, also known as Nana B, the party’s national organizer.
Following his report to the Ghana Police Service’s Criminal Investigations Department (CID) on Tuesday, May 27, 2025, Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, also known as Chairman Wontumi, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP, was arrested and detained by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).
He appeared before the CID on Monday, May 26, 2025, and was officially accused of mining illegally.
The NPP regional chairman was warned about his suspected involvement in illegal mining activities, water pollution, and unauthorized entry into a forest reserve, according to a police statement issued by Superintendent Joseph Benefo Darkwah, Head of the Public Affairs Unit at the CID.
Chairman Wontumi gave his statement, cooperated completely with investigators, and was later released on bail with two sureties, according to the police.
Following a failed attempt by security personnel to arrest him on Friday, May 23, 2025, EOCO detained him.
In a media interview at the EOCO headquarters, Nana B commented on Wontumi’s detention and stated that the party has decided to make sure its members who are invited by any state investigative body show up and help with the investigation.
The party will not, however, put up with intentional persecution of party members by the administration.
“Trust me we are not going to sit down, we are not going to allow this political intimidation and harassment to go on. In the come days you will hear from us. If you have an overwhelming endorsement from the people it doesn’t mean you have to harass the people. You invite somebody, the person honours the invitation and right afterwards just at the premises he is picked up as if he is a common thief” he stated.
