A nine-person team has been formed by the Western Regional Security Council to look into what caused the explosion that occurred early on Sunday morning at a quarry site in the Shama District in Kobenandohkrom.
Four people were killed and numerous others were injured in the explosion at the STA Addsam quarry, formerly known as Omini Quarry.
Many night workers, including the managing director (MD) of the company, who is thought to be of Chinese and Ghanaian descent, were burned alive.
Those who survived were taken urgently to Sekondi and the district’s numerous hospitals.
The committee has three weeks to deliver its recommendations and findings.
However, officers from the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), Ghana Police Service, and Ghana National Fire Service are on the scene assisting with rescue attempts while investigations get underway.
The site is littered with dismembered bodies that may belong to the Chinese nationals.
STA-ADDSAMS Enterprise, formerly known as Omni Quarry, is the owner of the property.
The extent of the devastation is being likened to the Appiatse gas explosion that took place in 2022.
The firm whose quarry site experienced an explosion on Saturday night, according to Western Region Minister Kwabena Okyere Darko Mensah, was working illegally.
He stated that as a result, the business’s owners will be held accountable for the terrible consequences of their actions, which led to the explosion in Anto Aboso in the Shama District of the Western Region.
On Sunday, September 10, Mr. Okyere Darko Mensah, who is also the Takoradi MP, made this known by visiting the tragedy scene.
At least eight people were killed in the blast, including three Ghanaians and some Chinese nationals.
Others who had been hurt were taken to hospitals in the Sekondi-Takoradi metropolis for treatment.
