Alban Kingsford Sumana Bagbin, the Speaker of Parliament for Ghana, has declared a fundamental change to the way votes are cast in the House.
This is a change from the previous procedure and allows deputy speakers to vote in private.
Mr. Bagbin emphasized that the purpose of this amendment is to end the chaos that has historically characterized voting processes.
Mr. Bagbin said that Deputy Speakers can now secretly transmit their voting choices to clerks, providing a smoother process, in a recent public forum at Takoradi, Western Region.
“Now, we have come up with new standing orders. So, a lot of work has been done within this period. Revising the standing orders which started in 2002 has not been successful until now, but within three years, we have succeeded in doing so”, he said.
The first and second deputy speakers can cast their votes by giving them to the clerks in quiet while you preside without me, and Mr. Bagbin will increase the number.
“It’s not appropriate for you to demand that people who are in favor shout “yes,” when you are simultaneously doing the same. The Speaker questioned, “How do you know whether you also shout, then?
With this reform, the Ghanaian parliamentary system’s vote integrity would be improved.
