President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo officially unveiled the Flowerpot Interchange on the Spintex Road on Tuesday, November 19, 2024, marking the start of a new phase in the country’s infrastructure development.
According to him, the modern interchange is a significant advancement in resolving Ghana’s transportation issues and promoting economic expansion.
The Flowerpot Interchange is a two-tiered complex with rebuilt roundabouts to improve traffic flow and a North-South flyover linking Boundary Road and the Burma Camp Bypass. For many years, the Flowerpot Roundabout was infamous for its crippling traffic, with over 5,000 cars per hour at its worst. The long-awaited resolution to this enduring issue is provided by the project’s completion.
“This is not just an interchange; it is a symbol of our commitment to ensuring that every Ghanaian experiences the tangible benefits of governance. Roads are pathways to opportunity and prosperity, and today, we deliver on our promise to transform Ghana’s infrastructure landscape,” President Akufo-Addo declared during the ceremony.
The importance of infrastructure development in attaining national progress was underscored by the president. He pointed out that the interchange will improve the free flow of products and services, reduce travel times, and boost regional economic activity. Furthermore, the project is in line with the government’s overarching goal of creating a contemporary, networked Ghana.
President Akufo-Addosaid stated that his administration has started an ambitious infrastructure plan since taking office in 2017. Along with the Pokuase, Tema Motorway, and Obetsebi Lamptey interchanges, the Flowerpot Interchange is now part of a list of finished projects. The President said these initiatives show a dedication to quality and strategic planning.
“We have constructed more roads and interchanges than any other administration in Ghana’s history. From the northern savannahs to the southern coastline, we are building a new Ghana where infrastructure serves as a catalyst for development,” he said.
The Obetsebi Lamptey Interchange Phase II and other interchanges in Nungua, Adjiringanor, and Suame were among the ongoing projects that the President also highlighted. He clarified that these efforts show the government’s determination to fully address the country’s infrastructure deficiencies.
The Ministry of Roads and Highways, under the leadership of Hon. Francis Asenso-Boakye and his predecessor, Hon. Kwasi Amoako-Atta, were praised by President Akufo-Addo for their crucial contributions to the project’s success. He also gave credit to the Department of Urban Roads and the project’s contractors for their work.
The President urged drivers to put road safety first and follow traffic laws when the interchange opens to the public. In order to ensure the infrastructure’s longevity for future generations, he urged all Ghanaians to assume collective responsibility for its upkeep.
“The Flowerpot Interchange is a legacy for our children and grandchildren. Let us safeguard this asset and let it stand as a testament to what we can achieve together,” he concluded.
