We’ve not received any court injunction to halt strike – GRNMA

Despite reports of a court ruling stopping the industrial action, the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) has said it has not received any official injunction notice from the court or the National Labour Commission (NLC) on its ongoing nationwide strike.

This follows reports that on Wednesday, June 5, 2025, the Industrial and Labour Division of the High Court in Accra granted the NLC an interlocutory order to force the GRNMA to call off its strike.

The Commission ruled that the strike was unlawful and asked the court to step in and prevent the group from continuing to cut off services.

The GRNMA, however, insists that the strike will continue until the injunction notice is duly served.

The association emphasizes that although it respects the judiciary and the NLC, it is unable to follow an order that it has not formally received.

Joseph Krampah, the association’s public relations officer, explained the GRNMA’s stance in an interview with Citi News on Friday, June 6, 2025.

“They [NLC] think they should serve us a letter; we cannot stop them. But what constitutes an illegal strike? When has the Labour Commission ever declared a strike legal? It is only considered illegal when an employer is not notified, and we did inform them. They received the letter,” he said.

He further explained that the GRNMA is committed to upholding a lawful action but cannot act on legal documentation that has not been properly served.

“If you’re declaring the strike illegal and you’re bringing an injunction, that is your job. We respect the court and the NLC very much. But for things we haven’t seen, we cannot act on them. None of our executives have been served any such letter. So, until we officially receive it, aluta continua,” he stated.

In protest of the 2024 Collective Agreement’s implementation delays, the strike started earlier this week. Unpaid allowances and delayed postings of nurses and midwives are among the complaints.

Nationwide interruptions to healthcare services have resulted from the industrial action.
