“We’ve suspended our strike as part of the Labour Commission’s directives” – PSWU

The National Labour Commission (NLC) ordered the Public Services Workers’ Union (PSWU) to stop its industrial action.

On Wednesday, October 23, 2024, the NLC gave the union the order to immediately end its strike.

This followed appearances before the NLC by the PSWU and the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) to discuss the continuing labor dispute.

To arbitrate the dispute, the NLC had called in the government team, which included the FWSC, the Ministry of Employment, Labour Relations, and Pensions (MELRP), the Ministry of Finance, and PSWU members.

Due to requests for two institution-specific benefits for its members, the PSWU had previously threatened to conduct an industrial action on Monday, October 21, 2024, in a notification dated October 14, 2024.

The PSWU’s General Secretary, Bernard Adjei, told JoyNews that the union met with the NLC and decided to end the strike after the latter stressed that talks for better working conditions could only begin when the action was called off.

According to Mr. Adjei, union members should report back to work on Monday, October 28. Next week, talks with the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission are set to begin.

“It’s just a matter of communication, but yes, people will fully report to the office on Monday. We’ve suspended the strike as part of the Labour Commission’s directives. If we don’t suspend it, how would Fair Wages meet us for negotiations,” Adjei said.

He also emphasized the need for institutions to realize that every action has repercussions.

Institutions ought to understand that every choice and action we make has repercussions. I can assure you that certain management members also wish to discipline our employees. Additionally, we won’t take any action that might endanger our members,” he stated.
