Johnson Asiedu Nketia, the chairman of the NDC, has called on the National Peace Council to step in and pressure the Electoral Commission (EC) to release the results of the general elections in 2024 as soon as possible.
As worried citizens await official results, his remarks coincide with an increase in tensions and unrest episodes across.
The two main parties, the NDC and the New Patriotic Party (NPP), have already announced their totaled results, which support the declaration of John Dramani Mahama as the victor, Asiedu Nketia stressed during a press briefing.
The NDC sees the EC’s silence in spite of this as a risky hold-up that could worsen tensions.
“The two key players in this election, the NDC and the NPP, have presented their collated results, and the NPP has even conceded. So what is keeping the Electoral Commission from officially declaring the results?” Asiedu Nketia quizzed.
He emphasized that as disgruntled adolescents at different collation centers become antsy, there may be disturbance.
“The peace is being threatened by the EC’s silence. He cautioned that in order to keep the situation from getting out of hand, the National Peace Council and other interested parties need to take immediate action.
In order to ensure justice, Asiedu Nketia also emphasized the National Peace Council’s duty.
The Council had previously led a peace agreement between political parties, he pointed out, but he maintained that without justice and openness, peace could not last.
“The Peace Council must show leadership by holding the EC accountable for this delay. Peace is not just about signing agreements; it requires all stakeholders, including the EC, to fulfil their responsibilities in a fair and timely manner,” he said.
In spite of the fact that all parliamentary results are still pending, he urged the EC to put the national interest first by declaring the presidential results.
“It is not necessary to announce the results of every constituency before announcing the presidential election winner,” he emphasized.
While restating the NDC’s position on preserving peace, Asiedu Nketia emphasized that the EC’s activities are essential to reaching that objective.
Our commitment to peace has never wavered, but justice is necessary for peace to flourish. “The EC needs to take immediate action,” he said.
