The appointment of a third deputy managing director has been met with opposition from the State Transport Corporation (STC) staff.
The employees argue that the company has to focus on its more urgent issues, thus the two deputies that are now on duty are sufficient.
Instead, the employees believe that the company should give priority to paying the GHS6 million in unpaid pensions and buying more buses for the business.
In a petition to the STC Board Chairman, the employees claimed that the company has “operated without a Deputy Managing Director for a considerable period of time; suggesting that the reduction in deputy managing directors will not adversely affect our operations.”
The employees emphasized the difficulties the business is currently facing, especially the “dwindling fleet of operational buses.”
“Presently, out of a total of 145 buses, only 39 are deemed roadworthy.”
“This predicament is attributed to the inferior quality of the Daewoo buses acquired in 2020, resulting in frequent repairs and maintenance issues” the staff stated.
Along with the outstanding provident fund contributions, they also emphasized other statutory deductions that are significantly overdue. These include the Provident Fund arrears, which date back approximately six years, the Tier 2 arrears, which total six months, and the SSNIT deductions, which are overdue by more than six million Ghana Cedis (GHS6,000,000.00).
