Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Minority Leader, has charged that the Speaker of Parliament is favoring the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

This came when four parliamentary seats were declared vacant by Speaker Alban Bagbin.

Three seats held by the governing party (now in the minority) and one held by the opposition NDC [Majority] are among the impacted seats.

Kojo Asante, the NPP MP for Suhum in the Eastern Region, Andrew Amoakoh Asiamah of Fomena, Peter Yaw Kwakye Ackah of the NDC of Amenfi Central, and Cynthia Morrison of the NPP of Agona West are among the lawmakers impacted by the decision.

The incumbent party reacted negatively to the Speaker’s decision and organized a walkout in protest.

Speaking to the media following the walkout, Mr. Afenyo-Markin accused the Speaker of being prejudiced and said that the action was taken to help the NDC.

“It is so clear that what the Speaker did was to give advantage to the NDC and do the bidding of the NDC,” he said.

The ruling party, which is now in the minority, declared that it would abstain from all legislative activities until the Supreme Court made a decision.

The Speaker has no authority to interpret the Constitution, according to Mr. Afenyo-Markin, who voiced his displeasure with the Speaker’s interpretation.

“The service of the writ to the biddings of the NDC it is so clear. But we believe in the law,” he said.

He reiterated that the party will take the Speaker’s decision to court. “We will follow up the process at court, and if the court makes a pronouncement, we will respect the orders of the court,” he added.
