Hon. Kwaku Kyei Baffour, the Municipal Chief Executive(MCE) for the Ashanti region’s Bekwai municipality, has voiced astonishment and dismay at the accusations of disrespect and incompetence leveled against him by a small number of assembly members.
The MCE called these accusations falsehoods, fabrications, and unfounded accusations made in an effort to stir up trouble for their own personal gain.
Speaking on Koforidua’s Afeema FM on Tuesday, July 7, the Chief Executive addressed accusations leveled against him by a small number of assembly members—roughly 4 out of the municipality’s 34 assembly members.
Due to his treatment of them as hostile and abandoned on March 6, Independence Day, the claimants attempted to have the Bekwai Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Kwaku Kyei Baffour, removed from office.
They contend that the MCE’s treatment of technocrats and dialogue with assembly members is less than stellar, which slows local decision-making and the execution of development projects.
In order to expedite the censure procedure against Hon. Kwaku Kyei Baffour, the Assembly Members have used these and other justifications.
However, reacting to the allegations, the MCE insisted that he has a good relationship records with the Assembly members including all the civil servants of the assembly through sponsoring most of their activities.
“Yesterday, after the Independence day celebration, I hosted some prominent chiefs who graced the occasion so i couldn’t join my assembly members to celebrate but i gave them gh¢2,000 from my own puckett for them to use it for chilling. This is not to say I disrespected them” he said.
The MCE for Bekwai said he was overwhelmed with huge endorsement by the assembly members as they declared their unflinching support to continue his work of implementation of policies and programmes to benefit the area.
Hon Kyei Baffour stressed that, since taking office, he has traveled to almost all of the communities in Bekwai to meet with the chiefs, influential people, and others to learn about their issues and assist in finding long-term answers.
The MCE stated that because Assembly Members are crucial to the District Assembly level decision-making process, the importance of their position in local government cannot be overstated.
Therefore, he commanded them to serve the citizens of their electoral districts with modesty and added that they shouldn’t use their position to participate in behavior that would call into question the Assembly’s honesty as they collaborated for the benefit of the Municipality.
