The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has stated that it will assist Ghana’s recently appointed Finance Minister, Mohammed Amin Adam, in carrying out changes meant to revive the country’s economy.
Since May 2023, Ghana has been a part of the IMF’s bailout program.
The Executive Director of the IMF, Kristalina Georgieva, wrote a letter of congratulations to the Finance Minister in which she hinted that Mr. Adam’s leadership would be crucial to maintaining the country’s reform initiative and extending the current program’s gains toward economic stabilization.
“Your leadership will be essential in sustaining Ghana’s reform effort and in further extending the current momentum of compelling program performance and gradual economic stabilization. Please accept my best wishes of your new at a critical moment in Ghana’s history,” the letter said.
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo appointed 23 ministers and deputy ministers on Wednesday, February 14, 2024, in a contentious ministerial reshuffle. Mohammed Amin Adam replaced Ken Ofori-Atta, who had served as the country’s finance minister since 2017.
However, the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has sharply criticized the move, characterizing it as a desperate political manoeuvre that would not result in a meaningful economic recovery.
