After losing 2-0 to Ecuador on Sunday at the Al Bayt Stadium, Qatar made history as the only host nation to lose the first game of a World Cup.
Enner Valencia’s goal in the opening three minutes highlighted the Maroons’ inexperience and lack of talent as they competed in their inaugural World Cup.

After being fouled by goalie Saad Al Sheeb, Ecuador’s captain Valencia won a penalties and converted it superbly to score the game’s first goal 13 minutes later.
After 31 minutes, the South Americans doubled their advantage.

In the 31st minute, a perfect lofted cross into the box by Angelo Preciado led to the second goal, which was headed in by the Fenerbahçe striker.
Ecuador won 2-0 in the opening period.
With Qatar also enjoying some strong stretches in the game during the second half, Ecuador appeared to have eased their foot off the throttle a little.
