The Electoral Commission (EC) claims that it gave those who made errors on their nomination papers more time to fix them.
Chief Executive Jean Mensa of the EC stated that although several applicants took the effort to correct their errors, others returned the applications with the same or comparable errors.
She claimed that in handling presidential candidates, the panel has been impartial and transparent.
“As in 2020, the presidential candidates were given a five day period for the filing process. This allowed enough time for aspirants to correct any errors identified in their forms. All in all, these eliminate the confusion and tension that characterise previous nomination processes prior to 2020,” she said on Friday.
During a news conference, Madam Mensa provided an update to the public about the nomination results.
Out of the 24 candidates that filed forms, the EC announced earlier today, September 20, a list of 13 candidates who successfully completed the nomination form procedure.
The head of the EC stated that a rigorous screening procedure led to the conclusion. Candidates from a variety of political backgrounds, including some independents and representatives of major parties, have been recognized by the EC.
A few of the rejected applicants are threatening to file a legal challenge to their rejection.
The nomination expenses of candidates who are rejected will be reimbursed, according to the EC.
