On their way home from school, nine kids drowned in a lake in Faana-Bortianor, an island village in the Ga South Municipality of the Greater Accra Region.

On Wednesday, May 10, 2023, 12 students were reportedly paddling a canoe across a lake on their way from Wiagoman to Faanaa.

Nine students perished after the canoe capsized midway through the journey while being paddled by one of the schoolchildren.

Three kids are missing, and there is currently a search for them.

The canoe’s owner is currently being held by authorities and helping with the inquiry.

Assemblyman Dan Bright Abayateye of the Botianor Electoral Area claimed that the tragedy has caused the neighborhood to enter a state of mourning.

He urged everyone to provide the neighborhood with a school building so that future instances of this kind may be avoided.

Since there are no schools in the area and the kids must take a boat to get to school, he stated, “If there is any NGO out there that can come to our aid it will be very useful.
