The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has ten presidential candidates running for office, and nine of them have asked the party’s leadership to centralize the August 26th special delegates convention.
The nine claim that the party will not support efforts to organize the election on a regional basis.
Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is the sole contender who is not receiving support.
They contend that it would be foolish to decentralize an election with only 900 participants.
They are consequently pleading with the party to permit the 900 delegates to gather in one location for the voting.
Coincidentally an opposing group from Greater Accra and the Central Region of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is demonstrating against an alleged decision by the party’s National Executive Council to decentralize the forthcoming Super Delegates Conference for the flagbearer election on August 26.
The group gathered earlier at the Asylum Down party headquarters and marched to the Alisa Hotel in Ridge, where the National Council (NC) was meeting to discuss the specifics of the impending convention.
Yaw Obeng Boateng, the group’s lead convenor, stated in a media interview that he prefers the conference to be centrally located for reasons of justice and transparency.
“They should intimidate or use other means to tilt the election for one person. We are not in support of that, they should congregate at one place. We are telling them that they should not tamper with the will of the people. These are the grievances of we the party members. We must not do anything that will split the party.”
According to its constitution, the NPP will reduce its list of potential presidential candidates from 10 to five on August 26.
The NPP claims to be creating a fresh register in the meantime for its special delegates’ congress on August 26.
The party claims that a fresh registration will be required because some of the delegates have already passed away.
A fresh register would be available by the end of the week, according to Justin Kodua Frimpong Koduah, general secretary of the party.
“We are in the final stage of doing the compilation. Basically, we are not going to exceed 1000 so between 900 and 1000 delegates will form the special electoral college.”
