The fishing season for inshore and artisanal fishers along Ghana’s coast has officially begun according to Hon Hawa Koomson, Minister in Charge of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development.

The Minister opened the closed fishing season at the Tema canoe basin in the Greater Accra area, which ran from July 1 to July 31 for canoe and inshore fishers and from July 1 to August 31, 2021, for industrial trawlers.

The sector minister stated during the opening ceremony on August 1, 2022, that due to issues with the delivery of premix fuel, the implementation of the 2022 closed season was not as seamless as anticipated.

She pleaded with all fishermen to maintain abiding with all fishing laws and norms.

As the fishing season begins, she urged everyone to follow the regulations outlined in the fisheries Act 625 as amended by the fisheries (Amendment) Act.

According to her, the Closed Season’s implementation is one of the ways determined with stakeholders to lessen excessive fishing pressure and overexploitation of the nation’s fish stocks.
