Majority Leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu made the dramatic decision to resign from office effective immediately during a crucial meeting of the majority group that was called on Wednesday night.
President Nana Akufo-Addo presided over the meeting, which was held at the heavily guarded banquet hall of Jubilee House in Accra. The topic of discussion was the growing tensions within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary group.
This crucial action was prompted by internal strife over reports that Alexander Afenyo-Markin might replace Kyei Mensah-Bonsu.
The resignation of Kyei Mensah-Bonsu marks a watershed in the dynamics of Ghanaian parliament and opens the door for the party and caucus to formally announce planned leadership changes.
This move is seen as an attempt to bring the NPP’s parliamentary group back to harmony and cohesion.
It is anticipated that Justin Kodua, the general secretary of the party, will formally announce these changes within the next 24 hours, marking the beginning of a new era in Parliamentary governance and clarifying the leadership structure of the majority group.
This change in leadership comes after Speaker of the House Alban SK Bagbin’s recent decision, which emphasized the critical role political parties play in choosing parliamentary leaders.
Bagbin stressed the crucial role that party mechanisms play in these appointments in his statement, which was made while he was tasked with interpreting the Standing Orders of Parliament.
The reorganization is in line with the ongoing legal debates about the NPP’s leadership reorganization, which focused on how to balance the NPP Constitution with the updated Standing Orders of Parliament, especially in relation to the Majority Caucus leadership choice.
This legal quagmire highlighted the tension between the NPP Constitution, which gives the National Council authority in such matters, and the Standing Orders, which assign leadership selection to the Majority Caucus.
