The three striking teacher unions have received an order from the National Labour Commission (NLC) to cease their strike action.

The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), and the Coalition of Concerned Teachers (CCT) announced a nationwide strike on Wednesday, March 20, 2024, claiming issues with how the government was treating their conditions of service.

Their grievances included the denial of teachers’ pay, the imposition of arbitrary schedule modifications without consulting the union, and the hold-up in the teacher laptop distribution process.

But on Thursday, the NLC released a statement, alleging non-compliance with Section 159 of Act 651, through its Chairperson, Justice Kwabena Asuman-Adu, citing Section 133 (1) of the Labour Act, 2003 (Act 651). The NLC directed GNAT, NAGRAT, and CCT to rescind their decision to go on strike.

The commission recommended that the unions follow the instruction.
