President Akufo-Addo has ordered the Volta River Authority to decrease the sale of energy to neighboring countries in response to the continued intermittent power outages, or “dumsor,” according to Samuel Atta Akyea, the chairman of the Parliamentary Energy Committee.
“The President is on top of the issues and I am even being educated that there is a command that our export of electricity to other countries should be curtailed. The President has an acute sense of the national need than making profits abroad so that is a factor that would come and help,” he told Joy News in an interview.
Recently, Ghanaians have been dealing with inconsistent energy supply, which has disrupted several industries and caused annoyances for consumers.
In light of the ongoing power crisis, Dr. Elikplim Kwabla Apetorgbor, the CEO of the Independent Power Generators, Ghana (IPGG), has called on the Volta River Authority (VRA) to stop exporting energy and concentrate on supplying local demand. The President has issued this direction.
According to IPGG, Ghana is now experiencing a power outage, which makes it necessary for VRA to restrict the export of hydroelectric power to nearby nations where customers may purchase power at much cheaper rates.
Mr. Apetorgbor emphasized how crucial it is that the Public Utilities Regulatory Authority abstain from charging exorbitant electricity rates to Ghanaians, particularly when there is an erratic supply of electricity.
