In the event that National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer John Dramani Mahama wins the presidency in December, he has promised that his administration will carry out a thorough inquiry and forensic audit of the National Cathedral project.

During a Sunday, July 7, 2024, media interaction in Accra, Mahama expressed serious concerns with the project’s accountability and transparency.

Mr. Mahama underscored that the NDC government would closely examine all facets of the project to guarantee cost-effectiveness and compliance with sound governance practices.

He clarified that in order to find any anomalies or instances of corruption and bring people accountable, the forensic audit would entail a thorough review of the project’s financial transactions, procurement procedures, and resource distribution.

“At the time this national cathedral came up, it was somebody’s personal commitment to God. And we were assured that public funds were not going to be used for the national cathedral. Unfortunately, we hear that 300 and something million has gone into it,” Mr. Mahama stated.

“Where did those payments go? Were they justified? Who did they go to? These are all things that we have to unravel. And I think that that is the first thing we will do before we even decide what to do with that huge pit” Mahama stated

Mr. Mahama emphasized the significance of accountability by saying: “Let’s first do a forensic audit and investigate. If individuals have taken the money of the Ghanaian people illegally, they should be held accountable and made to return the money.”
