The former Asokwa Constituency Chairman who contested for the Ashanti Regional chairmanship position for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Mr Robert Asare Bediako has confessed paying GHC 1,000 to each delegate that took part in the recently-held delegates conference at Baba Yara Sports Stadium but still lost miserably.

According to him the highest bidder won the Ashanti Regional election over the weekend.

Mr Bediako said “while I was paying each delegate GH¢1,000, I thought I would win but some paid more than me so the delegates also gave in to the highest bidder and it’s very worrying the trend of monetisation in our body politics”.

Chairman Wontumi earlier served as constituency chairman for Bosomtwe before becoming Regional Chairman in 2014, won his re-election bid in 2018 after his contender Robert Asare Bediako step down for him to go unopposed at Ejura and has been retained to lead again from 2022 to 2026.

They were five contestants vying for the regional position in Ashanti.

Wontumi polled 464 votes against that of his closest contender, Chairman Odeneho Kwaku Appiah (COKA), who got 306 votes and entered the chairmanship race, having served as constituency chairman for Afigya Kwabre South for 20 years. Robert Asare Bediako got 20 votes, former deputy Minister for Roads and Highways and Member of Parliament (MP) for Ejisu Constituency Hon Kwabena Owusu-Aduomi got 9 votes whiles Kofi Adum Bawuah got only 3 votes.

The Ashanti Regional Treasurer for the NPP, Hajia Zainab Sallow retained her seat with 388 votes while her closest rival Isaac Osei Kwarteng polled 221.

The first vice chairman Kwabena Nsenkyire lost his seat by 16 votes to Patrick Acheampong and the second vice chairperson position was won by Mrs Victoria Nyarko Owusu-Achiaw beat 6 men including the maverick former Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) Presiding Member Abraham Boadi (Opooman).
