Efua Ghartey, the first female president of the Ghana Bar Association (GBA), has received sincere congratulations from President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

As a highly skilled attorney, Mrs. Ghartey was chosen by her colleagues to lead Ghana’s legal profession—a first for women.

President Akufo-Addo celebrated Mrs. Ghartey’s accomplishment as a historic win for gender equality in a Facebook post, calling it a “powerful statement” that is consistent with Ghana’s continuous efforts to become more inclusive. He connected her historic victory to the recent enactment of the Affirmative Action Act, which strengthened larger national initiatives aimed at promoting women’s empowerment.

“A hearty congratulations to Mrs. Efua Ghartey and Mrs. Victoria Osei-Bonsu Barth on their remarkable victories in this year’s Ghana Bar Association elections! Mrs. Ghartey’s determination and perseverance have finally been rewarded as she becomes the first female National President of the Bar Council after three attempts,” the president said.

Along with expressing trust in Mrs. Ghartey’s leadership skills, President Akufo-Addo also forecast that she will take the GBA to new heights and encourage other women to seek top positions in the legal industry and beyond.

“As a member of the Bar, I am elated to live to see this day when the Bar is led by a woman. As President of the Republic, this victory is even more significant as it coincides with the recent passage of the Affirmative Action Act, making it an even more powerful statement in the journey towards gender equality,” President Akufo-Addo stated.
