A protest in Accra is scheduled by some activists for October 3–5.
The march is anticipated to begin in Legon Okponglo and end in Accra’s Black Star Square.
53 anti-galamsey demonstrators were apprehended and arrested by the police a week ago; the rally is intended to demand their release.
Known locally as galamsey, illicit mining is a long-standing environmental and social problem in Ghana. The demonstration, which is being held under the slogans “FreeTheCitizens” and “SayNoToGalamsey,” also aims to condemn it.
Legon Stadium, Okponglo Traffic Light, Shiashie/Standard Board Traffic Light, Shangri La, Airport Traffic Light, Association International School, National Service Secretariat, Castle Kawukudi, Kanda Highway, Accra High School Junction, Electoral Commission Office, Ridge, and other locations were approved by the police earlier this week. Ridge Hospital, the Accra Sports Stadium, the AU Roundabout, Parliament, Osu Cemetery, and Independence Square.
Social media has been a powerful tool for mobilization, and thousands of people are anticipated to participate in the protest.
