The National Investigations Bureau (NIB) has been instructed by President John Dramani Mahama to look into the National Service Authority following the discovery of 81,885 potential ghost names on its payroll.

In an attempt to pay off unpaid allowance arrears, the Ministry of Finance performed a headcount.

The ministry claims that the verified number of genuine National Service personnel was 98,145, which is a substantial decrease from the 180,030 names that the previous management had submitted for 2024 allowance payments.

Consequently, GHC 226,019,224 million was issued by the government to pay the verified personnel’s arrears.

The National Service Authority’s new management has been directed by President Mahama to enact immediate reforms in order to stop such fraudulent acts from happening again.

The president’s spokesperson and minister of government communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, affirmed the direction and reaffirmed the administration’s resolve to end financial mismanagement and increase transparency in government agencies.

The investigation seeks to improve the institution’s payroll administration and guarantee accountability.
