In order to power the nation’s thermal plants, the government is expected to spend more than $800 million for liquid fuel in 2025, according to Energy and Green Transition Minister John Jinapor.
The minister claims that if alternative solutions are not put in place, this amount of spending is unsustainable and may strain Ghana’s financial resources.
In his speech to Parliament on Wednesday, March 12, 2025, the minister emphasized the pressing necessity of working together to build a new gas processing facility.
He emphasized that Ghana’s high energy generation costs would continue to burden consumers and impede industrial expansion in the absence of effective reforms.
“This year alone, we require about $800 million to procure liquid fuels. If we had established a gas processing plant, we could save $400 million of that amount annually.
“And so if we are able to do a gas processing plant and process domestic gas, it will strengthen the currency and make fuel really available and gives you cheaper alternative sources of fuel which can be passed on to consumers. Also, we are diversifying our energy mix and bringing in renewable energy.”
