President John Dramani Mahama has emphasized the significance of transparency and accountability in law enforcement and reiterated the urgent need to rid the Ghana Police Service of corruption.

President Mahama emphasized the negative effects of corruption on justice and public trust during his remarks at the swearing-in ceremony for Christian Tetteh Yohuno, the new Inspector General of Police (IGP), held on Friday, March 14 at Accra’s Jubilee House.

He emphasized that respecting the rule of law and preserving national security depend heavily on police force integrity.

“Mr IGP, your duty extends beyond maintaining law and order; it also involves eliminating corruption from the service,” he said.

He said that in order to keep the police force from becoming a corrupt organization, it is imperative that the battle against corruption be waged with tenacity.

The President issued a warning, stating that law enforcement corruption damages the public’s trust in the legal system.

He clarified that the entire security apparatus is undermined when the public loses trust in the police, which makes it much more difficult to prevent and enforce crime.

He asked the IGP to take strong action against any misbehavior, including bribery, power abuse, and any other unethical behavior that jeopardizes the integrity of the police force, in order to allay these worries.

He emphasized that all serving levels must have a zero-tolerance policy against corruption.

“It is imperative that officers at all ranks are held to the highest ethical standards, and any form of malpractice, from bribery to abuse of power, must be swiftly and decisively addressed,” he emphasized.

President Mahama said he was confident IGP Yohuno would take on the task and restore the public’s complete faith and respect in the Ghana Police Service.
