After a week-long standoff, the senior staff association of the University of Cape Coast (UCC), which had gone on strike due to unsatisfactory working conditions and a backlog in allowance payments, called off the strike on Friday.
The action is in accordance with the National Labour Commission’s (NLC) mandate, issued following a meeting on Wednesday, to permit more discussions with management to settle the issues.
In order to address the senior staff’s concerns and complaints, the management of UCC convened a meeting with their leadership.
In a media interview, Christopher Aggrey, Secretary of the Senior Staff Association – Universities of Ghana (SSA-UoG, UCC), confirmed the news and expressed optimism for a successful resolution.
On Thursday, April 13, the senior employees withdrew their services in protest at what they perceived as the institution’s management’s “unfair treatment.”
They claimed that management had ignored their request to resolve a number of complaints, including those over appointments, promotions, the failure to pay agreed-upon allowances, and representation on the University Council starting in May 2022.
Without providing any evidence, they charged management with ignoring several reminders about their complaints.
Sandy Kumi-Sinatra, the head of the association on campus, said that despite the NLC and the Ministry of Education’s engagement, the university did very little to address their concerns.
SSA-UoG, UCC Local to present proposals for some of the issues mentioned in a petition to management and the Council, he said, regrettably the only interaction management of the University had.
In light of this, he promised that the strike would not end until their demands were satisfied, but subsequently, after consulting the national leadership of the Association, he was forced to abide by the NLC’s instruction.
As of the time this report was filed, the meeting between management and senior workers was still going on.
