The Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) has been allowed a week to reconsider its decision to deduct “unearned allowances” from the pay of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) employees.
If the allowances are not reinstated within the next week, the workers claim they would be obliged to start an ongoing strike action.
Sam Nat Kevor, the Divisional Union Chairman of GBC, spoke to the media on Friday, June 2, and declared that unless their requests are granted, employees will begin wearing red armbands and apparel to work starting next week.
Some GBC employees threatened to go on strike on Friday, May 23, after having their allowances taken away.
Rent, housing, utilities, vehicle servicing, and transportation are just a few of the categories that are impacted.
The staff has now expressed discontent with this move, claiming that because inflation is still on the rise, eliminating such allowances will make living expenses worse.
Ben Arthur, the boss of FWSC, is adamant that the program is a part of their joint national payroll monitoring exercise with the Internal Audit Agency.
He explained that throughout the payroll monitoring process, it had been found that some GBC employees were currently receiving allowances to which they were not legally entitled.
According to Mr. Arthur, the commission will not budge in its aim to provide better working conditions for employees.
He stated that it is an oddity that needs to be fixed that a cleaner on the GBC payroll receives a domestic employee allowance.
