Minority backs approval of Gertrude Torkornoo as Chief Justice

The Minority has endorsed Gertrude Torkornoo as their choice for Chief Justice.

This is despite the fact that they vehemently disagree with the Supreme Court’s recent decision invalidating James Gyakye Quayson’s election in Assin North.

The Minority questioned Justice Torkornoo when she appeared before the Appointments Committee on May 26. Justice Torkornoo was a member of the 7-member panel that rendered the decision in the aforementioned case.

Initially, the Minority had asked that her nomination not be decided upon until the complete ruling in the case was made public.

The MP for Bawku Central, Mahama Ayariga, spoke on behalf of the Minority, explaining that despite their disagreements with Justice Torkornoo, they think she is qualified to be Chief Justice.

The NDC representative on the Appointments Committee stated during a press conference today that the committee has “reached a unanimous decision to approve the Chief Justice nominee.”

The NDC thinks that Justice Gertrude Torkornoo would play a key role in reviving the dignity and integrity of the judicial system because she is a woman and acknowledges the present issues regarding the reputation of the judiciary.

“Her impressive curriculum vitae highlights her extensive experience, having served as a judge from the High Court to the Court of Appeal, and eventually at the Supreme Court. We firmly believe that capable women should be afforded opportunities to hold key national positions. Despite our disagreement with her jurisprudence, we recognize her qualifications for the esteemed position of Chief Justice of the Republic of Ghana,” Hon Ayariga said.

The NDC’s choice represents an essential stage in the approval procedure, indicating a readiness to forward and support Justice Torkornoo’s candidacy. It emphasizes the party’s dedication to advancing the rule of law and justice, notwithstanding concerns with recent court decisions.

Justice Gertrude Torkornoo will be the center of attention as the process progresses in the hopes that under her guidance, the judiciary will undergo constructive adjustments. The endorsement of the NDC lends credence to her candidature and denotes a concerted attempt to win back public support and preserve the ideals of fairness for all Ghanaians.
