An ultimatum demanding the execution of agreed-upon allowances within a week has been issued by three branches of the Ashanti region’s pre-tertiary teaching unions.

If the government failed to comply with this, they threatened to put down their tools.

The government has been at odds with the unions for fifteen years over seventeen allowances, which have now been cut to four crucial ones. The unions include the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), and Coalition of Concerned Teachers (CCT).

The aforementioned allowances comprise the Deprived Area Allowance, Extra Assessment Allowance, Book, Data, Online Teaching Support Allowance, and the Continuous Personal Development Allowance with an upward adjustment.

At a press conference held in Kumasi today, Monday, May 6, 2024, Regional Secretary for GNAT, Mr. Atakora, conveyed the aggravation of their members over the protracted postponement and the government’s seeming unwillingness to execute the allowances, especially given the present economic difficulties.

“We have had enough of the nonchalance, complacency, and aloofness of the government,” Mr. Atakora made a clear statement, stressing how urgent it was to address their worries.

The unions have given the government until Monday, May 13, 2024, to resolve the allowance difficulties and make good on its pledge and commitment to teachers.

The unions will use strike action to demand that the allowances be implemented if this deadline is not met.

Mr. Francis Yaw Owusu, the regional Chairman of NAGRAT, echoed Mr. Atakora’s thoughts and reaffirmed the unions’ position, indicating that should the government not respond quickly, they mean business.
