The Affirmative Action Gender Equity Bill 2024 has been formally signed into law by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
The law, which was approved by Parliament in July, intends to address the sociocultural, political, and economic inequalities that have historically placed women at a disadvantage because of patriarchal structures and customs.
The goal of the new law is to provide a more inclusive and balanced society by promoting gender parity in the public as well as private sectors.
On Thursday, September 19, 2024, the development was verified by Dakoa Newman, the Minister of Gender, Children, and Social Protection, in a post on X (previously Twitter).
“Update: President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo @NAkufoAddo has assented to the Affirmative Action (Gender Equity) Act, 2024. Next Step: Implementation,” she posted on her social handle on X.
