President Akufo-Addo has assured the diplomatic community in Ghana that the country’s enviable human rights records will not be compromised.

The President said while he has noticed the anxiety caused by the passage of the Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill among the diplomatic community, they should rest assured that Ghana will not backslide on its human rights records.

“I am aware that last week’s bi-partisan passage by Parliament of the Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill, on a Private Member’s motion, has raised considerable anxieties in certain quarters of the diplomatic community and amongst some friends of Ghana that she may be turning her back on her, hitherto, enviable, longstanding record on human rights observance and attachment to the rule of law. I want to assure you that no such back-sliding will be contemplated or occasioned,” President Akufo-Addo wrote in a statement posted on Facebook by the Director of Communication at the presidency, Eugene Arhin on March 4.

Different parties have responded to this in different ways, including the diplomatic community.

In a brief to President Akufo-Addo on March 4, the Ministry of Finance warned of the grave consequences of signing the Bill.

However, before taking any further action on the anti-LGBTQ+ Bill enacted by Parliament, President Akufo-Akufo-Addo advised all stakeholders to wait for the outcome of the case that has been filed in the Supreme Court by a concerned citizen.

The President said that it would be appropriate to wait for the Supreme Court’s decision in light of this recent development.
