The 13th African Games, which will take place in Accra, Ghana, from March 8–23, 2024, will see the Ministry of Youth and Sports transform the Borteyman Sports Complex into a University of Sports for Development after the event.

The Ministry claims that this is being done to guarantee the quality of maintenance of the Borteyman Sports Complex’s amenities for the nation’s ongoing benefit.

Speaking during a news conference held today, March 4, 2024, Sector Minister Mustapha Ussif emphasized that the location will have more infrastructure, including football fields, cafeterias, hostels, and medical centers “this will attract local and foreign sports federations to camp in Ghana and prepare for various competitions.”

For him, converting the facilities into a Sports Development University will “position Ghana as a sports hub within the West African sub-region.”

On February 13, 2024, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo officially opened the Borteyman Sports Complex.

Seven competitive sports—table tennis, handball, tennis, volleyball, swimming, badminton, and triathlon—will be able to be played in the Borteyman Sports Complex. Notably, badminton, table tennis, triathlon, and tennis will all serve as qualifiers for the Paris, France, Olympic Games in 2024.

A 1,000-seat swimming pool with 10 lanes for competition and 8 lanes for warm-ups is one of the most prominent features of the Borteyman facilities. Another is a multipurpose Sports Hall that can hold 1,000 spectators for events like basketball, badminton, netball, table tennis, and weightlifting.

Over 13,000 people are anticipated to attend the 13th African Games, including 5,000 athletes, 3,000 volunteers, 3,000 technical officers, and 2,000 guests.

Furthermore, it is anticipated that more than two billion viewers will take part globally via TV, radio, and other virtual channels.

The Local Organizing Committee is under increased Ministry oversight to fulfill its technical, management, administrative, and organizational responsibilities, according to Mr. Ussif, the Minister of Sports.
