Dr. Arthur Kobina Kennedy, a prominent member of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), has claimed that Kiss Agyebeng, the special prosecutor, has been acting inconsistently.
He asserts that there have been situations where the Special Prosecutor should have taken action but did not, such as when it came to issues with illicit mining (galamsey) and other national issues.
Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, a former minister of environment, science, technology, and innovation, had stated that he was being held on a GHC2 million bond following his detention by the OSP.
He claimed that the arrest was related to an ongoing investigation into the activities of the now-disbanded Inter-Ministerial Committee on Illegal Mining (IMCIM), which he served as chair of.
He added that he had been invited to the OSP’s office three weeks prior and had been detained thereon.
The arrest of Prof. Frimpong-Boateng was regrettable, according to Mr. Arthur Kennedy, who discussed the situation on GHOne TV with Lantam Papanko.
“I believe that in light of Frimpong-Boateng’s report, we can all see proof that clear-cut galamsey is taking place. We can see the contaminated mercury-filled water that our little children and expectant mothers are consuming. The forests that are disappearing are visible. Party leaders can be seen galloping around while the President stands up to defend some of them.
“So the idea that all the eleven Ministers who were on the Inter-ministerial Committee, Professor Frimpong-Boateng who is the one trying to do something about it is the one who gets arrested is really unfortunate. And then I think that the Special Prosecutor’s personal manners when they are talking about consecrating saints then the same person who describes himself as the conscience of the nation,” Dr. Arthur Kennedy stated.
“If you juxtapose those two claims, they are incoherent, and those claims that no one can pressure him politically are also false,” he concluded. Additionally, he has acknowledged that he is capable of identifying problems even in the absence of complaints.
