John Dramani Mahama, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, has reacted to President Akufo-Addo’s request that he debate Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

Mr. Mahama rejected the notion of a debate with Bawumia, telling supporters in the Ningo Prampram Constituency in the Greater Accra region that doing so would only help the Vice President’s standing.

Following President Akufo-Addo’s suggestion that Mr. Mahama was avoiding a debate with Dr. Bawumia because of concern that the Vice President would reveal the flaws in his plans, Mr. Mahama made his remarks.

Mahama was hesitant to participate in a public discussion that would draw attention to the alleged flaws in his plans for the nation, according to Akufo-Addo.

The president’s reasoning was dismissed by Mr. Mahama on Thursday, October 17, who said that there was no need to argue Bawumia.

He asserted that Bawumia need to concentrate on discussing the Ghanaian people and resolving the government’s shortcomings instead.

Mr. Mahama blamed Bawumia for the nation’s economic problems, pointing out in particular his position as leader of the Economic Management Team.

Additionally, he urged Dr. Bawumia to express apologies to Ghanaians for the government’s poor economic management.

He pointed out that rather than pursuing a discussion to divert attention from the shortcomings of his government, the vice president had to accept accountability for the country’s economic woes.

“I will not bring Bawumia to my level by debating him. He should go and debate the people of Ghana and apologise to them. I know my level,” Mahama said.
