As Ghana gets ready for the elections in December, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has encouraged citizens to be on the lookout for fake news.
The President underlined the risk of fake news instigating unrest during elections during his speech at this year’s Eid celebrations, which were held in Accra’s Black Star Square. In order to preserve harmony and national unity, he urged the populace to reject false information.
During his speech, President Akufo-Addo emphasized the dangers of people using religious and ethnic distinctions as a means of advancing their own political and personal agendas.
He issued a warning against the propagation of misleading information, especially in the era of new media, where anonymity might make it easier for incorrect information to proliferate.
The President used Quran chapter 49 verse 6 in his appeal to Muslims to check the credibility of news sources before believing what they read, stressing the need to avoid ignorance and later regret over decisions made based on misinformation.
