Bryan Acheampong, the minister of agriculture, has urged all of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer candidates to withdraw and support Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

The Vice President needs to have everyone’s support, he claimed, and the super delegate elections proved it.

According to Dr. Bryan Acheampong, the results of the party’s Saturday, August 26, 2023 Special Electoral College (SEC) elections were a clear indication from the delegates that the Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, will represent the NPP in the 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections.

Dr. Acheampong stated during a one-on-one interview on “Ekosiisen” on Asempa FM that “what happened on Saturday (26 August) with the Super Delegates’ Conference has rendered the November 4 primaries moot.”

“The NPP has a spirit, and if the November 4 presidential primaries take place, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia will win overwhelmingly,” I hope that every other candidate will renounce and spare the party from any difficulties.

“The Special Electoral College election’s result was not determined by a contest. Even if you sum the percentages of all the remaining nine (9) candidates together, it won’t equal 50% of the votes cast if one candidate [Dr. Bawumia] received 67 to 69% of the vote, the NPP member of parliament for the Abetifi seat claimed.

The Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, will not be chosen as the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party, in my opinion. The facts are the facts.

Bryan Acheampong continued, “Those [the 9 remaining hopefuls] who give up now will be remembered by the party because we need time to close ranks and prevent opening of cracks so that we can press ahead and pursue the 2024 campaign.

According to the official results released by the Electoral Commission, Bawumia received 629 votes, or 68.15% of all valid votes cast across all 17 polling places, to win the race.

Following the former trade minister Alan Kyerematen, who received a total of 95 votes (10.29%), came the MP for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong, who received 132 votes (14.3%).

With 36 votes (3.9%), the former agricultural minister Owusu Afriyie Akoto took the fourth place. Francis Addai-Nimoh and Boakye Agyarko followed with 9 votes apiece (0.98%), placing them in a run-off for the fifth spot.
