Hon. Michael Amoah Awuku of the Atwima Nwanbiagya Municipal Assembly in the Ashanti Region, has professed everlasting solutions to the perennial dam spillage and flooding in Ghana.

The government appointee is of a strong view that, these disasters could be curtailed on two conditions; evacuation and resettlement of the affected residents as well as law against recalcitrant people.

The Atwima Nwabiagya Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), therefore, suggested that, the state should take a pragmatic step against certain individuals and policy implementers in the country whose actions and inaction are resulting in deaths and loss of properties to the Akosombo Dam spillage in some parts of the country.

“My first solution to these spillages in the country is to evacuate and resettle the residents residing in these affected areas.

“Next is pragmatic steps and law to punish policy implementers sleeping on their jobs as politicians, civil servants, and NADMO officials in the country. If you look at the equation, everyone is responsible for the disaster”, the MCE pointed out on Kumasi-based Sompa FM.

This comes after the Ghana Navy disclosed that over 8,000 people have been rescued from flood-stricken areas as a result of the destructive spillage from the Akosombo Dam.

Commodore EA Kwafo from the Naval Training Command during an update on the floods at Mepe in the Volta Region said the combined rescue team deployed to the affected districts is currently monitoring critical infrastructure and responding to distress calls to neutralize the effect of the damage caused by the spillage.

“We are monitoring critical infrastructure as well as responding to distress calls from the district assemblies, VRA, and NADMO and we have been rescuing people on the water”.
