Sammi Awuku, campaign aide to Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has revealed that the presidential candidate of the ruling party would shortly announce his running mate for the general elections in 2024.

Mr. Awuku made a suggestion that the announcement is about to happen by implying that Dr. Bawumia has already chosen his running mate.

His remarks coincide with conjecture that has been circulating among political experts and members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) on the apparent hold-up in selecting a running mate. This has sparked conversations about possible candidates and how they would affect the party’s chances of winning elections.

Speaking on Tuesday, May 14, on Accra’s Onua FM, Mr. Awuku attempted to comfort the public and party members by stating that Dr. Bawumia is still well within the proper window of time to declare his running mate.

He cited past precedent, pointing out that Dr. Bawumia was chosen by then-candidate Nana Akufo-Addo as his running partner for the 2008 election in August.

Mr. Awuku contended that while this historical example shows how these statements might come out at any time, it shouldn’t always be reason for alarm.

“We are very much within the timeline,” Mr. Awuku affirmed. “Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia was elected barely six months ago, so we still have time. If you recall, his nomination in 2008 was done somewhere in August. So, for us in the NPP, we are very much within our timelines.”

He further emphasised the flexibility regarding the timing of the announcement, stating, “It can be tomorrow, it can be next week, it can be next month, it can be three days from now. The flagbearer at this point is very clear in his mind who his running mate is going to be, and when he is ready, he is going to announce that.”
