Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has urged John Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), to talk politely rather than derogatorily.
Dr. Bawumia charged that Mr. Mahama had called religious leaders, civil society organizations (CSOs), and traditional leaders “hypocrites” because of their alleged lack of speaking up on matters of national concern.
During a September 16 campaign event in Accra, he voiced his concerns with Mahama’s rhetoric, stating that it compromised the honor of the position he had previously held.
He feels that these groups of individuals should be respected rather than decried since they are essential to the nation’s development and cohesiveness.
“You all know I am competing with the former president to win this election. I think he has realised that he will lose the elections so he is always angry. I heard he insulted some pastors, chiefs, imam and CSOs saying they are hypocrites. He even insulted the ECG.”
“Today he said the NPP is a foolish government. Why would a former president say something like this? We must have some level of decency in the language we speak as politicians.”
Elections, the flagbearer contended, ought to be about ideas, not about insults.
“When you don’t have any ideas, you start insulting others, but when you have, you share them. In our case, we have bold solutions to problems,” he remarked.
Dr. Bawumia defended the accomplishments of the NPP government, pointing out that they had surpassed the previous government in a number of crucial areas.
“You said we are a foolish government but we have created more jobs than your government, we have built more roads, interchanges, schools, factories, and hospitals than your government. Every sector of the economy that you can mention, we have done better but you are saying we are foolish.
“If you believe in yourself, come for a debate. He is scared because he knows I back my statements with data,” Dr Bawumia added.
