As the national elections on December 7 draw near, Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, the National Chief Imam of Ghana, has urged political figures and interested parties to put peace first.
With election season well underway and emotions high, Sheikh Sharubutu has called on politicians to conduct themselves with decency and decorum throughout their campaigns.
Speaking via his spokesman, Sheikh Armiyawo Shaibu, the Chief Imam emphasized the need for political leaders to protect national unity and stability during this critical democratic exercise while addressing a group of Muslim youths in Accra.
“Politicians, being at the forefront of the campaign season, are especially responsible for maintaining a tone of civility and respect in their utterances, as their words carry immense weight and influence,” said the Chief Imam.
In order to maintain public confidence, Sheikh Sharubutu further encouraged the Electoral Commission (EC) to provide transparency and accountability throughout the electoral process.
“As citizens, we must keep the peace. Sheikh Sharubutu calls on all stakeholders in our election processes… The EC must ensure transparency and accountability so we can have a credible election that will guarantee a credible result.”
The Chief Imam also urged political parties to watch what they say and refrain from making offensive remarks that can inflame hostilities.
“He calls on the political parties to be cautious about the way they speak to their supporters, the vitriolic, the diatribes, and some of the fierce statements that we see being put out there,” said the spokesperson for the chief imam.
